After six months of intense development, we are thrilled to introduce GNOME 51, the latest version of GNOME. We would like to recognize all our contributors who worked tirelessly to make this new version more accessible, practical and user-friendly.

Ubuntu 26.10 is out on 15 October and ships with GNOME 51, with its own customisations on top. New GNOME releases aren’t backported, so Ubuntu 26.04 LTS stays on GNOME 50 for the duration of its supported period.

Improving Ubuntu Desktop stability under memory pressure

As part of Ubuntu 26.10, we are changing a long standing default that defines how the desktop behaves when the system runs very low on memory.

Ubuntu 26.10 changes how the system choose which processes are killed when memory runs low, making a rogue browser tab is less likely to punt you back to the login screen.

Stonking Stingray (to be 26.10) Beta Freeze

As of a short while ago, Stonking Stingray has entered the Beta Freeze, with a goal of releasing Beta images sometime late Thursday. From now until the Beta is released, please only upload updates for packages on any release images if you /need/ to get them into the Beta itself. Please hold off with everything else until after we release on Thursday.

The queue freeze will last from now until the final release next month, which means that all seeded packages will now need a spot-check and review in the queue from a release team member before they are let into the archive.

As with the previous releases, we have a bot in place that will accept uploads that are unseeded and don’t affect images. Don’t take this as an open invitation to break Feature Freeze on those components. This is just to reduce the burden on the release team, so we only review the uploads that need very serious consideration. If you find the bot is blocking an upload that you think should have been auto-accepted, let us know, and we’ll sort it out.

We will be spinning a set of Beta candidates in the next few hours or so. We then encourage people to start testing ASAP for their favourite flavour(s) as they come off the line.

Happy bug-hunting from now until the final release, and please do help out and test images, etc, where you can, and let us know what’s broken in your environment(s).
